Types of Soap Molds

The craft of soap making is really fun and can lead to some rather creative results if you were so inclined. What makes bar soaps so interesting nowadays is not just the pleasant frangrances they are enriched with, but the shape and form of the soap itself can make one interested in purchasing a bar. Determining the shape of the soap all comes down to the type of soap mold that you use when making soap. There are many different types of soap molds available at craft stores that you can experiment with when making soap and depending upon what soap base or wax you use and what process you use to make it, you can choose from almost any soap mold you wish. Today we are going to cover the different types of soap molds available and which soap making methods work best with them.

One of the most common soap molds you can purchase is the basic soap making mold. These soap molds are the ones used to make ordinary looking soap bars such as the ones you find at the supermarket and by that I mean the traditional rectangular looking bars which we have been using for decades. Basic soap making molds have a rectangular shape and are made from silicone. Though there are some basic soap making molds that come in wood too. These types of soap molds will require a wax paper lining to prevent the soap from actually sticking to the mold. You can also use a plastic wrap to avoid the situation. As for the silicone molds, the majority of them will not need any interior lining as they are designed to prevent any sticking.

The interesting part about making soap is that you are not limited to boring rectangular soap molds. There are many different types of soap molds that can be used for many different themes or occasions. You will find an abundance of creatively designed soap molds themed for special holidays such as Christmas, Thanxgiving and even Halloween and Easter. These types of soap molds make for excellent soap decors to be used in the house if you have a large family or friends that visit a lot during the holiday season. It is not uncommon to find some really fun soap molds for special occasion parties such as birthdays, weddings and baby showers as well.

Finally, and this is by far the funnest part of soap making, is to make your own soap mold. Well, you won't literally be making your own soap mold to pour the base into. Instead you will be shaping and sculpting the soap with your own hands. Once you are done mixing and melting your soap base and frangrances, allow the mix to cool until you can handle the base with your hands. At this point you can roll the soap in between your hands and palms and start giving shape and form to your soap. The more you practice this technique, the more skilled you will become. In time you will be sculpting some really creative soap molds for your own home made soap.
